Galactic cirri in deep optical imaging
The ubiquitous presence of Galactic cirri in deep optical images represents a
major obstacle to study the low surface brightness features of extragalactic
sources. To address this issue, we have explored the optical properties of
cirri using g, r, i and z bands in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Stripe82
region. Using state-of-the-art, custom made, image processing techniques,
including the modeling and removal of the instrumental scattered light produced
by the stars, we managed to isolate the optical diffuse emission by the cirri,
allowing their photometric characterization. We find that their optical colors
are driven by the dust column density: The cirri become redder as their 100
m emission increases. Remarkably, the optical colors of the Galactic cirri
differ significantly from those of extragalactic sources, with a characteristic
bluer r-i color for a given g-r, allowing one to detect these by using a simple
color relation. Our results show the high potential of deep multi-band optical
photometry, on its own, identifying the presence of cirri at a higher spatial
resolution than those provided by far-infrared observations. The combination of
very deep data and multi-band photometry (as the one produced by LSST and
Euclid) would make it possible to build dust maps of unprecedented quality.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&
Emotional Eating and Obesity
The first time that terms such as food addiction and addictive eating were mentioned was in 1956, in an article by T.G. Randolph. Recently, from a psychosomatic point of view, some authors have linked obesity and food addiction. Along with the concept of food addiction (derived from the similarities between the consumption of certain foods and “substance addictions”), a couple of questions seem to arise: What if it’s not just the particular food (the substance) that we are addicted to? Could it be that we are addicted to something else that makes us eat it? Thus, the concept of eating addiction has its own set of particulars. It brings the attention back to the individual and not the external substance (the food or ingredient). The focus on confronting the obesity problem should be moved away from the food itself (the addictive substance) to the person’s act of eating (the addictive behavior). Undoubtedly, there are many links between emotions and overweight/obesity. This chapter aims to review the current state of this field of study which is the emotional basis of obesity (at least a particular case of obesity and weight-related disorders)
Herramienta de planificación y dimensionamiento para redes WiMAX
A software tool for planning and dimensioning Wireless Networks based on standard 802.16 is presented in this paper. Due to the deployment of communication systems based on this standard, it is necessary a tool which allows an easy implementation and dimensioning of this type of networks. With this tool the user will be able to evaluate point to point and point to multipoint networks, obtaining results such as losses in the link, power received, signal noise rate, coverage or bit rates the network is able to handle. For that purpose, the tool will employ technical specifications of transmitters and receivers, design parameters of the network and different propagation models
Sklar's theorem in an imprecise setting
Sklar's theorem is an important tool that connects bidimensional distribution functions with their marginals by means of a copula. When there is imprecision about the marginals, we can model the available information by means of p-boxes, that are pairs of ordered distribution functions. Similarly, we can consider a set of copulas instead of a single one. We study the extension of Sklar's theorem under these conditions, and link the obtained results to stochastic ordering with imprecision
Bivariate p-boxes
A p-box is a simple generalization of a distribution function, useful to study a random number in the presence of imprecision. We propose an extension of p-boxes to cover imprecise evaluations of pairs of random numbers and term them bivariate p-boxes. We analyze their rather weak consistency properties, since they are at best (but generally not) equivalent to 2-coherence. We therefore focus on the relevant subclass of coherent p-boxes, corresponding to coherent lower probabilities on special domains. Several properties of coherent p-boxes are investigated and compared with those of (one-dimensional) p-boxes or of bivariate distribution functions
